Saint Joseph's Island (Ilha de São José)
Tocantins/Maranhão, Brazil
2008 Working at OLHO filmes in Brasília, Brazil
Project "Image bank on the Saint Joseph's Island", Tocantins River.
The "Ilha de São José" was located at the Tocantins River, in borderline of Tocantins and Maranhão States. Why WAS it located? The water of the river flooded the island after the construction of the Estreito plant. Therefore the residents were deterritorialized from their land and home.
Before this event, our team of five persons spent six months on the field recording and observing the peculiar way of life from approximately 80 families. We could then follow all their activities during the two well-defined seasons of the year: rainy and dry.
Expressive gestures, behaviors, moments and places were recorded in a succession of pictures throughout the research with the intention of communicating the art, beauty, and daily life of this community and their island.
This project was contemplated in 2007 by the National Program of Intangible Heritage - PNPI, of support and encouragement for safeguard from the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage - IPHAN.
It is a production of OLHO filmes in partnership with Via Verde Carolina.
